Dog Moved to New Home
The old Sea Dog was recently removed from the parking lot where it
served as a fine place to hang Christmas lights for many years. Rumor
has it that it will find a new use as a sauna! Greg's Towing pulled
it to it's new home a few Friday nights ago.....
Fisheries Technician
Club member, Dean Kolpin, works for the Wisconsin
DNR as a "Fisheries
Technician" from
May 1st to September 30th, approximately 20 hours per week. He
does a creel census, which means he collects fish information for Saxon
Harbor. He
measures
and
identifies the fish caught and also interviews the anglers. He
keeps
track of the number of boaters going out or returning to the harbor.
Weather and lake conditions are also recorded. The data is recorded
and compiled in a report and sent to the DNR station in Bayfield.
During the school year, Dean is a physical education/health teacher
and the athletic director at Hurley, WI K-12 School.
Coast Guard Auxiliary
The mission of the U.S.
Coast Guard Auxiliary is to contribute to the
safety and security of our citizens, ports, waterways and coastal regions.
We balance our missions of Recreational Boating
Safety and Coast Guard Support with Maritime Homeland Security and
other emerging challenges which
are a result of our growing understanding of changes required
in this post-9/11 era.
Locally, this is accomplished by assisting
the U.S. Coast Guard in
any endeavor they request.
Coast Guard flotillas consist of boaters interested in promoting activities
such as boating education and Boating Safety Checks. Here at Saxon Harbor
and Black River Harbor boaters combined to form a flotilla, which has
been active for 33 years. This flotilla works under orders from the Coast
Guard Station at Bayfield Wisconsin. Boaters interested in such activities
may contact
Jack Poole at 906-932-1712 or Bill Hines at 715-893-2242.
The annual Boating Safety Check is conducted prior to the boating
season. It's not a mechanical or survey inspection, but a chance to
check on PFD's, fire extinguishers and other simple things like making
sure navigation
lights are working and just generally talking to the boater about safety
issues. The boater is issued a sticker for the boat if it passes inspection.
