Saxon Harbor Boating Club: History and Purpose
The club was formed in 1974 with 36 members. It has been continuously active since that time. By 2006, the club boasted 203 members on its roster and the membership has continued to grow since the harbor expansion was completed.
The club incorporated as a non-profit organization in the State of Wisconsin in 1978. The by-laws state that the membership is open to any interested person. Upon payment of dues a membership runs from January 1st to December 31st. The purpose of the club is to:
- Promote safe boating;
- Pursue the environmental protection of Lake Superior and its rivers and streams;
- Attempt to keep members aware of changing regulations which pertain to fishing and boating;
- Seek the improvement of Saxon Harbor and its facilities and assist where possible; and
- Contribute to the betterment of the community, where possible.
The club has been instrumental in the recent expansion of the harbor. Club members were asked for input and took part in many of the meetings with Iron County officials, the Corps of Engineers, the engineering firm and contractoring companies who worked on the project. As the primary users of the harbor, we felt our past experiences and knowledge of the harbor could help shape the direction of the project so that new harbor users would feel this facility offers a good value for the services and amenities provided.
